Labeling Yourself

When you read these labels what do you picture?

Bossy

Emotional

Feisty

Crazy

Did you picture women associated with each of those labels? My guess is that most of you did.

These are terms used almost exclusively to describe women. Often in a negative way.

These labels are used as weapons to protect the patriarchy and keep women in their place.

You also choose labels for yourself. You use them to define you and how you want others to see you.

Successful

Executive/Lawyer/Doctor/Director [insert prestigious job or title]

Organized

Intelligent

Are you using those labels because they feel good to you or as a way to hide your real self?

Last week with my coach, I realized I have been using labels I'd chosen for myself in order to hide. I'd been holding back from sharing parts of myself that didn't fit with the outward label I'd chosen. Even though the hidden parts feel like the real me.

I've decided to let go of the "positive" labels I'd been hiding behind and embrace the "negative" label that feels like it really describes me. I invite you to do this too.

I'm letting go of the Successful Lawyer label. Not because I wasn't. Or because I'm not proud of that part of my life or those accomplishments. But because it isn't who I am now. I've been using it as a way to hide the parts of me that don't fit with the smart, successful, rule following, Type A lawyer ideal.

You may be doing this too. You could be hanging on to a label out of fear of what happens if you leave it behind. Or because you think it's what "they" think you should be. You could be hiding because you're worried about what others will think if you let out the fully real you.

I invite you to embrace being bossy, emotional, feisty and crazy.

Bossy means you have a vision and you're not afraid to tell people about it.

Emotional means you care about your work, your life and your results.

Feisty means you don't take shit from anyone.

Crazy means you do things in a way that other people don't.

I think those are outstanding labels that we as women need to take back. They're only negative if we allow them to be. What would be different in your life if you were to unapologetically embrace the label that society has told you is bad?

For me, I'm unapologetically embracing my new label - Witch.

Before you start picturing brooms and cauldrons (because society tells us witches are evil and abnormal) let me explain. I'm a witch because I listen to and trust my intuition. I read cards and use them to guide my decisions. I see what makes people tick by using their Human Design. I can put things out into the Universe and watch it manifest into reality.

Some people prefer the terms spiritual or woo. I like Witch. It's a label that has kept women quiet and scared for centuries. There was a time that the label meant you would be burned or drowned.

I'll run the risk. It's worth it to feel like me.

What label are you letting go? What new label feels like you?
