I asked myself this question yesterday when I walked into Costco. The front of the store is filled with winter coats, Christmas decorations, wrapping paper and presents. I had to stop and look at my watch to double check the date - it was October 5.
I'm not going to debate the merits of having Christmas stuff in the store when it's still over 70 degrees in Chicago. But I do want to make sure you make the most of the last three months of the year.
Once the Christmas decorations show up in stores it's really easy to start putting things off until next year.
Because you convince yourself that the year is almost over anyway. Or that it's impossible to
find a new job
start a side hustle
go back to school
take a class
write a book
change careers
work with a coach
at this time of year because the year is almost over. You tell yourself there's no point in even trying until the ball drops and a new year begins.
But right now there are 86 days left in 2021. That's over 12 weeks. Or put another way, that's over 2,000 hours you can use to get closer to doing the thing you want to do.
If you start today, you'll be 2,000 hours ahead on January 1.
That's a life changing amount of time. Use it.
Make a plan for the next 86 days. If you'd like to get a new job, decide to reach out to one person every day. This could be applying for a job, reaching out to a recruiter, connecting with someone in your network, asking for references, going to a networking event or responding to a LinkedIn connection request. Your new job could be just one person away.
But you have to decide that these last 12 weeks are valuable. If you don't, you'll miss the opportunities that come to you. You'll dismiss the new connection request or miss the perfect job posting because you've given up too soon.
